pilates instruction

Did you know the term “Pilates” is not trademarked by one individual or company?
“An October 2000 decision in Manhattan’s federal court declared that Pilates, like
yoga and karate, is an exercise method and not a trademark.”

This decision now allows for any person/company to claim they are Pilates trainers.
And, there are numerous high quality, professional Pilates education centers producing
Pilates trainers all around the world. BUT, there is also the risk that unsavory, not well-
qualifed, well-trained individuals simply claim to be a Pilates instructor without having
any expertise or certification.
Takeaway: ALWAYS make sure you ask where your trainer recieved their education and
expertise. If it was a 3-hour course, or “on-the-job” training, look elsewhere. Most
qualified trainers have undergone hundreds of hours of didactic, practical and internship
hours to enable you to have a safe and effective Pilates session.
