Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis - a common condition causing bones to become weaker and thinner. The bones of the spinal column, wrist and hips/pelvis are most commonly affected and can result in painful fractures.  According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, more than 9 million Americans have osteoporosis, and 48 million have low bone density.

WHY? - The bones in your body are constantly broken down and then rebuilding.  As we age, this "renewal" state changes and bone mass is lost more quickly than it is created.  

Risk factors include age, gender (females are more commonly affected), race (greater risk if you're white or Asian), family history, smaller body frame size, eating disorders, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking and medications. 

Symptoms may include:
* Pain
* Loss of height
* Change in posture
* Bone fracture

I recently completed an online course through "Buff Bones" (see certificate below) which has provided me with some new ideas on how to incorporate safe and effective modifications to our Pilates repertoire for use with my clients with osteoporosis.
